Happy Friday!
We finished the first full week of school! We did some more practice of routines and following the rules, but we also started some lessons and learned some valuable things this week.
Reading - We focused on “Check for Understanding.” This is the foundation of all the reading strategies and even adults do it without thinking. It’s stopping to make sure you understand what you are reading. We read some fun books to practice this strategy. We also practiced “Read to Self.” The students are building stamina so that they can read by them self for 20 minutes. They need to read quietly, stay in one stop, read the whole time, and start right away. This week we read 6 minutes, 4 minutes, then 5 minutes!
Spelling - we reviewed consonant sounds by doing some fun games!
Math - We started Unit 1 about addition. We learned how to tell an addition story and how to think about numbers with parts and a whole.
Bible - We learned about the days of creation when God made the world. We learned that on the 7th day he rested and that's why we rest on Sundays and Saturdays!
Social Studies - We talked about Community and how we as a classroom are part of a community - we work and play together!
This week we also talked about the 4 things we want to be at OCSI - Kind, Respectful, Hard workers, and Self-controlled. We really want to learn these for 4 things so that we can grow up to impact the world!
This week we also visited the library and got to check out 1 book. Please have your child read it with you at home. The book is due back on TUESDAY! Please send it with your child then.
Today was our first FUN FRIDAY! The students got to choose origami, geoboards, playdough, or pattern blocks.
This week we also had a special guest start with us in our room - please meet Mrs. Halley Hewitt. She will be student teaching in our classroom until December. She has jumped right into the classroom learning everyone’s names and helping students with their work. She will slowly start teaching different subjects throughout the year. She has already worked with kids for many years. I’m excited to together this semester!
