Friday News and Upcoming Information!

Wow! That a FUN day! I saw so many different characters walking around school today! From Cat in the Hat, to Clifford, to princesses, and characters from adventure books, to dragons, detectives, platypus, alligators, wizards, train conductors, and so much more!

After the parade, both first grade classes went back to our class to have Ms. Turner, Mrs. Fox, Mrs. Bezner, and Mr. Spencer read our Character Parade books. It was so much fun! Thank you to all the parents who came out and who designed some of the amazing costumes!!

Reading: This week we practiced “Read to Self” and “Read to Someone” with a new twist: a reflection paper. Students will begin responding to the books after they read them. We also read a story called Tomas Rivera, a biography, about a boy who grew up hearing his grandpa’s stories and became a teacher and author.

Math: We are continuing our work with place value of 10’s and 1’s but his week we also met a special character: Ally the Alligator. Ally love to eat big numbers hence: greater than, less than and equal to! It is a very helpful way to remember! On Wednesday we also did Math explorations. There was 4 places around the room and we rotated to learn about the area of a board, measuring objects with a balance, figuring out the best way of counting lots of pennies and playing a math game: The digit game. We learned a lot and had fun!

Bible: We got to learn the crazy story of Samson. God used even a man like that who made some wrong choices to defeat the Philistines! We also learned the story of Naomi and Ruth (We even had a guest speaker come in, right, students? *wink, wink*) Ruth was a foreigner in Israel, but God still used her in the special family line of David AND Jesus! Wow!

Spelling: This week we practiced the spelling bee words all week! We even did a practice bee today. Next Wednesday, we will do our class bee to decide the top 3 students who will go on to the 1st and 2nd grade bee on February 5th. Study hard everyone!

Science: We are learning the states of matter: solids, liquids, and gas. Here’s a fun video!

Chapel Songs

Today we had a fun time worshipping the Lord with some great worship songs in chapel! The students wanted to listen to them at home too, so I'll post some of their favorite songs. Please make sure to supervise the children while they are on youtube!

Homework Checklist

WOW! What great weather today for Kite Day! Some of those kites when up so high!

I also enjoyed seeing the crazy hair and mismatch that the students came in with. Amazing!

Tomorrow is a little hard with Decade's Day but if you look up 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, or 80's American style on the internet you might get some ideas. It can also be dressing up from a long time ago. Even long ago Japan!

Here is the Homework Checklist for this week:

Friday News and Information for January 12-16

Happy first week back at school! The students came back so excited to be back at school and excited to see me! I was very excited to see them too! We had a great week in 1st grade and here is a recap:

Reading: We re-practiced two of our Weekly 4 things: Work on Writing and Word Work. We made sure that we are doing it correctly. We wrote about our Christmas break as well as worked on the spelling bee words.

Math: We started learning about place value with base 10 blocks. We started counting them as well as trading the 10’s to count better. We also trained in Place Value Boot Camp where we practiced counting with rows of soldiers standing in a line, some as the 10’s and standing tall, and some as 1’s squatting short. Can you guess these lines of soldiers?
Answer: 52
Answer: 33

Answer: 42
Bible: We started the cycle of the Judges. Over and over in the book of Judges the Israelites were obeying God for a while, but they soon forgot and worshipped idols. Then God would send an enemy army to fight them. The Israelites would remember God and pray that God would save them, then God would send a judge to rescue them. The Israelites had peace once again until the judge died and the cycle started over again. We learned about two of the Judges - Othniel and Gideon and how God picked ordinary men to be used mightily for him! Today we acted out Gideon's battle with the Midianites with only 300 soldiers, a torch, jar, and horn!

Science: We learned the life cycle of a butterfly! We got to watch a beautiful video of the butterfly egg, to the caterpillar, to the chrysalis, and finally the butterfly!

Library: We had to reschedule library so we went today! Here are some pics:

Fun picture of the week: Students working together to make a long race car track by sharing their whiteboards!

Report Cards went home today! Please keep all the papers and return the blue folder with your signature on the line for 2nd quarter!
