Also, I made a change to the students behavior calendar in their Home-to-School Notebook. Instead of a yellow sticker like I have been doing, if the student had a good day, I will give a regular fun sticker such as a star or a rainbow. (I ran out of yellow stickers...) This way, it is also fun for the students to see a colorful sticker instead of a boring yellow sticker all the time.

So in case you were wondering last night when you saw the star sticker - that's what it means! Thanks for being flexible with me as we figure out how to work best in 1st grade together! :)

Friday News for Week of August 31-Sept 4th

We had another fantastic week in first grade! Here’s a recap:

This Week:
Reading: We have been continuing to build stamina - today, we finally made it to 22 minutes! Wow, great job first graders! We also started writing simple stories, reviewed the short a sound, learned some sight words, learned what a sentence is, and practiced word work. The students got to make their spelling words out of macarroni!

On Friday we had our first spelling test! The students were nervous but did well.

Math: We learned how to count with tally and played some games with tally. We also learned about calendars as well as thermometers and temperature. Here’s a fun song we listened to about temperature:

We also asked the class what their favorite weather was and graphed the final vote with tally.

On Friday we learned about number stories, as well as had our first test. The students did great!

Bible: We had an exciting week with Bible. After learning about how God created the world, we then heard the sad story of Adam and Eve and how they disobeyed God’s rule and so brought sin and sadness to the world. But how exciting it was that God gave us hope! He sent his son Jesus so that we are not separated from God forever.

Friday News for Week of August 24-28

We had a fantastic 2nd week of first grade!

The students are getting more used to school every day and are figuring out the procedures and what to do. We practiced a lot more this week and are ready to jump into learning.

This week:

Reading: We learned all about Read to Self. We made an I-chart with what we need to do, as well as added hand gestures. Then - we started building stamina. Some days we did more than other days but as for today, we were able to do 12 minutes of Read to Self. Great job students!

Look at them Reading so well!!

We also learned some important reading strategies such as Check for Understanding, Back up and Reread, and Cross Checking.

Math: We learned what it means to work with a partner while playing a math game. We used our number lines on our desk to play a game with dice and a straw. We also used our whiteboards to answer some math questions. Today we used number cards to play Top It and worked on One more and One less of a number.

Students enjoyed some time on their whiteboard after the lesson!

Bible: We started with the very first story in the Bible: Creation! It was amazing to think that God created everything with only his word “Let there be light.” God is amazing!
