Spelling Words: review short a and o words
Bible Verse: “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” Genesis 12:1
This week we practiced Read to Someone. We learned that we need to sit EEKK (elbow, elbow, knee, knee), our voice level needs to be quiet, we need to stop and check for understanding. When our partner doesn’t know a word, we can ask them, “Do you need coaching or time?” This gives them a chance to ask for help or to try it again. We did it today for 10 minutes!
Writing:
Good writers use spaces between their words.
Good writers use the correct upper case and lower case.
Good writers use a capital letter and a period.
Math: This week we learned all about how to make 10. We first figured it out with magnets, then we colored a bar of of blocks to see the pattern. Then we played lots of math games! We used 10 cubes and a cup to hide some underneath, as well as used dice to roll and cover up a cloud with the other sum on it.
We also used our number grids this week to count up and down (back). The students did great!
Bible: We finished our first unit in Bible with lots of epic stories! From Noah’s Arc to the Tower of Babel, it’s been great to see how God makes a promise to the people and never ever breaks his promise. We are excited to learn about Abraham next week.
No Spelling Words: Review of short a and short o sound.
Bible Memory: “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” Genesis 12:1

Also, I made a change to the students behavior calendar in their Home-to-School Notebook. Instead of a yellow sticker like I have been doing, if the student had a good day, I will give a regular fun sticker such as a star or a rainbow. (I ran out of yellow stickers...) This way, it is also fun for the students to see a colorful sticker instead of a boring yellow sticker all the time.
So in case you were wondering last night when you saw the star sticker - that's what it means! Thanks for being flexible with me as we figure out how to work best in 1st grade together! :)
We had another fantastic week in first grade! Here’s a recap:
This Week:
Reading: We have been continuing to build stamina - today, we finally made it to 22 minutes! Wow, great job first graders! We also started writing simple stories, reviewed the short a sound, learned some sight words, learned what a sentence is, and practiced word work. The students got to make their spelling words out of macarroni!
On Friday we had our first spelling test! The students were nervous but did well.
Math: We learned how to count with tally and played some games with tally. We also learned about calendars as well as thermometers and temperature. Here’s a fun song we listened to about temperature:
We also asked the class what their favorite weather was and graphed the final vote with tally.
On Friday we learned about number stories, as well as had our first test. The students did great!
Bible: We had an exciting week with Bible. After learning about how God created the world, we then heard the sad story of Adam and Eve and how they disobeyed God’s rule and so brought sin and sadness to the world. But how exciting it was that God gave us hope! He sent his son Jesus so that we are not separated from God forever.
On Friday we practiced several drills including fire drill, earthquake drill and intruder drill. On Tuesday, we had some drama class HS students come in and read some stories to us!
