Friday News for Week of October 19-23

Happy Rainy Friday!

I had a wonderful Parent Teacher Conference day today. Thank you to all the parents who came out to talk with me. I am really excited for how much each of your child has grown in first grade so far and it was my pleasure to share that with you.

This Week:

Reading: This week we focused on Making Predictions. Its great to make a guess about what’s going to happen in the story (and not look at the back of the book!) We read a super fun book called Ugly Fish. We tried to guess the whole time what was going to happen at the end and everyone guess it correctly! Please encourage your child to make a prediction while they are reading books at home.

Math: This week we thought about patterns in numbers again with Frames and Arrows. Based on the rule, we thought about what the next numbers in the pattern were. We even had to figure out the rule for ourselves.

This week we also learned about dimes! We practiced counting by 10 and practiced exchanging nickels and pennies with dimes. The students are going great!

Bible: We are continuing through the story of Joseph. Even though Joseph was in jail for something he didn’t do, God still still had a plan for him and God put Joseph as second in command of all of Egypt! Next week we were learn what happens when a famine comes to the land and how he will get to see his brothers again.

We are also working on a hard Bible verse. We are using this song to remember the story!

Science - This week we learned the Life Cycle of a Chick! We watched a fun video of chicks hatching from an egg. Here is our fun Friday painting activity. We used a fork to paint the chick.

Next Week:

Spelling Words: back, neck, kick, pick, sick, rock, sock, duck, have, or
Bible Memory: “Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth; worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us and we are his.” Psalm 100:1-3

Friday News for Week of October 13-16

Happy Friday!

It was a short week but full of fun learning going on!

Reading: This was our first week to try out 7 sessions for our reading time. The students had to pick and work independently on Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Read to Self, Word Work, Book Shopping, Listen to Reading, and a Reading Group with the teacher. They are on their way to becoming better readers and writers!

Our focus this week was on consonants and vowels as well as characters. We read a fun story called Space Pup about a super hero dog. We thought about what Space Pup looked like, how he acted, and what he thought.

We also read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, we thought about the characters of Sam and the other guy. We thought about how the other guy changed his thinking at the end of the book when he tried the green eggs and ham. So fun!

Math: This week we learned about using a number line to help us count up and down. We also learned how to tell time to the half hour. That was a little bit hard because we had to learn the term, “Half-past ___ o’clock.” People don’t use that term as often but it is good to know. We also learned how to read clocks as 3:30.

Bible: We are starting the story of Joseph today. He went through a lot of hard times! His brothers sold him into slavery, he was put in jail for something he didn’t do, wow! But through it all, God is with Joseph!

Fun Friday: Today we did creation station! The students got to pick a box and design and create whatever they wanted from it! My students are so creative!

Special Visitors: This week we had the girls from K5 come visit our classroom. The first graders became a big brother or sister and read to the K5 students. All the first graders did awesome!!

Student of the Week: Every Friday, I will choose a student to send home a Student of the Week sheet. Please have your child fill it out and send it back to school on Monday. If you can, please send in a picture! I will hang it up for the week and on Friday they can "Show and Tell" their paper and pictures. :)

Next Week:
Spelling Words: add puff egg well will doll kiss miss you live
Bible Memory: ““Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth; worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. ” Psalm 100:1-3

No School Friday, October 23 - Parent Teacher Conference - Please return the form to let me know if the time and day is okay with you. If you cannot be available on that day, we can move it to a different day.

October 30 - Sweet Potato Digging - a permission slip was sent home today. Please sign it and return. The students needs a shovel and a bag for the shovel on the day of Sweet Potato Digging.

Friday News for Week of October 5-9

Happy Friday!

We had a rocking week in first grade!

Reading: We learned about Characters this week! Every story has a character. On Friday, we picked a book we have been reading and found the character in the story. This week we continued to ask questions while we read.

Writing: This week we learned about good opening phrases for writing. We want our stories to be exciting to read so instead of “One day,” we learned to start our stories with, “One exciting day” “One scary day” “One cold day.” The students did great in thinking of good opening phrases.

Math: We learned all about patterns! There are patterns all over the world! We looked at patterns in numbers especially even and odd numbers. We also looked at patterns on a number grid and found the patterns for 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.

Bible: We have finished the crazy story of Jacob! After all of his tricking, he also got tricked into marrying Leah and Rachel, and how God continued to protect him and guide him because of the promise God made to Abraham. Next week we will start the fun story of Joseph.

Chapel: This week, 8 students from 1.1 helped Mrs. Godoy with puppets for chapel. They did a great job doing puppets to a song about the Wise and Foolish Builders.

NO SCHOOL Monday October 12th

Upcoming Events:
October 9 - End of 1st Quarter
October 12 - NO SCHOOL
October 23 - Parent Teacher Conference - We sent home a form today. See if you are able to come and sign and return. If you are unable, we can reschedule for a different time or day.
October 30th - Sweet Potato Digging - more information next week.
November 14 - Walkathon - information sent out this week.

Change of behavior management system:
For 1st Quarter, to get students used to and comfortable with school I used the sticker calendar system in their Home-to-school notebooks. Now that students are used to school life, start in second quarter, we will be switching to a bead system.

Everyday, the students are able to earn beads by following the rules. Students will also loose beads by not following the rules. At the end of the week on Friday, we will do a Fun Friday. Depending on how many beads they have they will get first choice on the Fun Friday activity. The less beads they have, the less choice they have, or may have less time off of Fun Friday. This system will help the students take more ownership of their own behavior. Let me know if you have any questions about this!

Thanks always for your support!

Friday News for Week of September 28-October 2

Fun Friday News!

This Week:
Reading: We tried the first time running through a choice for Daily 5 - The students got to choose between Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Throughout the week the students did all of them but got to choose what order they wanted to do it in. It went great! Next week, we’ll have 3 more choices including Listen to Reading, Book Shopping, and a Reading Group with Ms. Turner.

This week we looked at question words. We looked at the different question words as well as learned the importance of asking questions while reading. What is going to happen next? Why did the character do that? When did that happen? Where are they going? are all GREAT questions to ask while reading.

Math: This week we looked addition and subtraction. We learned the vocabulary with those words such as more, less, plus, minus, equal to, add, subtract. We solved some math facts as well as learned about solving number stories. It’s always a good idea to draw pictures while trying to solve number problems. The students did great with it! We finished Unit 2 today with some review of counting pennies and nickels, reading clocks to the hour, reading tallies and graphs, and addition and subtraction facts.

Bible: We are continuing through the exciting story of Jacob and Esau. Even though Jacob tricked his brother 2 times, God still uses him for a part of His great plan that he promised to Abraham. We made some finger puppets to help us tell the story.

Here is a fun video about the brothers.
