Friday News for Week of September 20-23

Happy Friday!

What a beautiful day at the beach today! Here’s some pictures:

This Week:

Reading: We learned about Titles. Titles are the names of the books and they have either all capital letters or the first word of every letter is capitalized

Writing: We learned about using the upper and lower case letters correctly as well as using spaces in between our words.

Math: We learned how to add to sums of 10.

Spelling: We learned about words that have the short e sound.

Bible: We learned that God is holy and so he doesn’t like sin. We leared that God keeps his promises to Abraham and Sarah.

Social Studies: We learned about Asia.

Next Week:

Scholastic Book Order and Homework Checklist

This last Friday, you may have received something that look like this:

If you would like to order some books for you or your child, you can!

I followed through a few of the steps to show you if you wanted to order online with a credit card.

1. Select what books you want and add them to your basket. When you are finished, press "Go to Checkout"
2. Type in your email address, press "next"
3. Schools - Make sure it says Okinawa Christian School, press "next"

4. Deliver Option. Make sure it says OCSI and my name, Ms. Turner's 1.1 Class and select "Dispatch Order to School."

 

5. Child Details - Enter your child's name and the class (ex. 1.2, 2.1)

6. Choose Payment Method - enter Credit Card information and select "Pay Using this Address" 

7. The last step should be confirm! You should get an email about your confirmation and Scholastic will also send me a confirmation email. 

THIS CURRENT September Order is due by September 30!

Friday News for Week of September 12-16

Happy Windy Friday!

I was so sad that our field trip was canceled today, but I’m excited to have it next week! Thank you for still providing home lunches even though we didn’t go on the field trip.

This week was bitter-sweet for us. One of our classmate - Joshua had his last day on Wednesday and headed to Hawaii. We’ll miss you Joshua!

We also had a birthday on the same day - Happy Birthday Valentina!

This Week:

In Reading we learned:

• Use the beginning and ending sounds
• Cross check the pictures and words
• Check for understanding
• Back up and Reread

Writing - We brainstormed ideas we can use while writing and learned that to write a good story, we should write about one idea or event.

Math: We are practicing addition by thinking of how to make a sum of 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. On Thursday, we played some games and did centers to learn sums to 8.

Bible: We started the fun story of Abraham! His name was Abram, but God chose him for a special purpose and made a special promise, called a covenant with him. God promised him that he would make Abraham into a great family and give him a lot of land, and family as much as the stars in the sky or the sand on the shore. But one problem… Abraham didn’t have any children! So unfortunately he tried to take matters into his own hands, but next week we’re learn how God kept his promise to Abraham.

Toguchi Field Trip - RESCHEDULED!

As you heard from Mr. Jernberg's message, our field trip scheduled for tomorrow

has been rescheduled for September 23. Because of the late notice, the lunch room 

is unable to make the lunches for the school lunch students. So tomorrow, even if 

you are school lunch, can you still provide a home lunch? Thank you very much!

明日行くつもりだった遠足は台風の影響で来週の金曜日９月２３日に変更しました。カフ

ェテリアで給食を食べる生徒は明日もお弁当を持ってきてください。変更を今日したので

カフェテリアは明日の食事の準備ができません。ご協力ありがとうございます。

Also, a quick note to say that Picture Day will be September 20th, Tuesday. On that 

day, make sure the students come to school dressed nicely for pictures. We will 

take the pictures in the morning, so if you would like them to change clothes 

before recess, please send an extra set of clothes with them. Order forms for 

pictures will be sent home today, if you'd like to order pictures!

Friday News for Week of Sept 6-9

Happy Friday! We had a great week at OCSI this week.

In Reading and Writing we...

• Read a story and checked for understanding
• Read a story and cross checked the pictures and the words to see if the story made sense
• Wrote a story and underlined the words we didn’t know how to spell
• Did Word Work with macarroni to practice the spelling words
• Read for 20 minutes straight without any interruption INDEPENDENTLY!!!

In Math…

• We learned what it means to add zero, learned vertical addition, and how to break apart word problems.

In Bible...

• We learned the story of the Tower of Babel, how God confused everyone's languages.
• We reviewed the story of creation, the fall, and Noah's Ark

September 16 - Toguchi Field Trip
It's not fun to go to the beach without the sun - SO If it is pouring down rain on September 16th in the morning at 8:30am, we will stay at school for the day and reschedule to September 23rd. Pray for good weather! :) ９月１６日の朝、渡久地への遠足が大雨ならば９月２３日に変更します。

Friday News for Week of August 29-September 2nd

Happy Friday!

We had a very busy week in 1st grade:

• We built stamina in reading independently and now we can read at 14 minutes!
• We reviewed all the consonant sounds so we can be ready for spelling next week!
• We started Writer’s Workshop where the students wrote a short story and drew a picture. They even got to share their work with their friends.
• We read some more Pete the Cat books and checked for understanding to make sure we know what’s happening in the story.
• We played some computer games in the computer lab.
• We learned a lot in PE, Art, and Music.
• We learned that God always keeps his promises through the story of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and Noah’s Ark.
• We reviewed how to add two numbers together with pictures, part-whole, and addition.
• … and so much more!

Next Week:

NO SCHOOL - MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th!!!

Library Books: please make sure to send them back to school with your child on Tuesday mornings! During library time, your child usually gets 2 books. One book must be an AR (Accelerated Reader) book. It will have a blue sticker that looks like this.

Depending on the student's STAR test results, the child will have a book within their reading range to help them continue to improve in reading. On Tuesday the students will take a quiz over their AR book at their level.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS READING THE BOOK. It's a good idea to read it together and ask them questions while they read it. The other book they can check out is a book they can have for fun for the week.

1st and 2nd Grade Field Trip to Toguchi Beach (一、二年生の渡具知ビーチへの遠足）

WHEN: September 16, Friday 10:30am-2:00pm ９月16日金曜日

WHO: The 1st and 2nd Grade students will be going to Toguchi Beach for a Field Trip! All parents are invited to join us!子供たちは渡具知ビーチまで遠足にいきます。ご父母の皆さんもどうぞ来てください。

WHAT: Students will enjoy God’s creation at the beach, while getting to know their fellow students and teachers. Students can spend the day playing at the park and searching for wildlife on the beach front.子供たちは神様の素晴らしい世界と生徒たちとの交わりを過ごしながら遠足を楽しみます。
