Friday News for the Week of Feb 27- Mar 3

Hello everyone! Happy Girls Day!

This Week:
Reading: Our focus was “Fairy Tales.” These stories are super fun to read!
This week we read, Rumpelstiltskin, The Princess and the Pea, Jack and the Beanstalk, Hansel and Gretal, and Rapunzel. We tried to look for common themes throughout all Fairy Tales including a good opening (Once upon a time…) a good ending (and they all lived happily ever after), royalty (kings, princesses), love, good characters, bad characters, and special numbers or repeated phrases. Some Fairy Tales have all of those and others only have some of them. The students enjoyed all the stories that we read! Next week we’ll continue with some other common Folk Tales.

Writing: This week we started writing our own Fairy Tale! We used a graphic organizer to write down some ideas we have including good and bad characters, setting, magic, problem, solution, and beginning, middle, and end! The students are so creative with their stories! I can’t wait until they are finished!

Math: We are flying through Chapter 6 which is about double digit addition. The students are working so hard at double digit addition especially at understanding the place value of the 10’s. We are adding and subtracting by 10’s as well as we even tried double digit addition with regrouping.

Bible: We are finally introduced to our favorite Bible character of David! Saul disobeyed God and will not be king for very long. Instead God chooses David to be king. David is just a young shepherd guy but God sees his heart and chooses him. One of David’s most impressive thing is his battle with the giant Goliath. With God on his side, David fought a 9ft tall giant with only 5 stones and a slingshot. David also played the harp and wrote many of the Psalms that can be found in the Bible, including our Bible verse this week! On Thursday the students got to fight Goliath with pompoms and spoons!

Thursday was Dr. Seuss’ birthday! We celebrated by reading The Cat in the Hat and doing a Cat in the Hat 100’s grid coloring challenge. Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Friday News for the Week of Feb 21-24

Happy Friday!

This Week:
Reading: We focused on Fables. Fables are stories where usually animals are the characters and they can teach us a lesson. We read some fun ones this week including The Tortoise and the Hare, The Fox and the Stork, The Ant and the Grasshopper, The Mouse and the Lion, The Ugly Duckling, and The North Wind and the Sun. The students did a great job thinking of the lesson that we can learn from those stories. Next week we will focus on fairy tales!

Math: This week we worked up to trying double digit addition. We first focused on understanding adding double digits by using our base 10 blocks.

Then when we were comfortable with that, we learned that normal way of adding. The students are doing so well understanding double digit addition! I hope they get quicker and smoother at addition! We also did a fun problem solving lesson on Thursday with a question like this. That was challenging but fun!

Maya’s family also let us borrow their tangrams sort of shapes. We used it for math time and for our Fun Friday today!

Bible: This week we continued to follow the Israelites through their ups and downs. We learned that Samuel was a good judge and prophet of God, but the people continued to disobey God. As a result, the Philistines were attacking them and were winning so the Israelites decided to bring the Ark of the Covenant into the battle. The Philistines captured the Ark and placed it in their temple of Dagon, an idol. In the morning, the idol Dagon had fallen on the ground! The Philistines picked it back up but then the next day, Dagon had fallen on the ground AND the arms and head had fallen off. The Philistines knew how powerful the real God was so they got scared and sent the Arc back to the Israelites. No idol  can stand before our God! In today’s story, the Israelites look at their neighboring country and want a human king! But wait! They have God as their king. They will soon reject God as king and God will allow them to have some good kings and some very bad kings.

Social Studies: We have been learning about the 3 different types of communities: Urban (like a city), suburban (like a neighborhood), and rural (like farms and open land). We are having a fun time to try to figure out what kind of community we live in.

Friday News for Week of Feb 6-10

Happy Friday! Wow! Doesn’t it feel like Antarctica outside? brrrr

We had a fabulous week here in 1st grade!

We started our week off with our weekly “Would You Rather” question. This week is was “Would you rather eat a hamburger for breakfast, or pancakes for dinner?” The students discuss their answer with a partner and they have to tell their partner “WHY” they would pick that. Then we share our answers and see what everyone picked. Here’s a picture of them discussing.

In Reading, we learned the strategy of Voracious Reading. This means to use the periods, question marks, and exclamation points of the story to make your reading exciting! We practiced on some fun sheets. See if you can do it!

We also read some books with repetitive phrases and rhyming words to help get our fluency in reading up.

In Math, we continued working through place value and looked at numbers to 120. It was a perfect week to learn this in math because this week we hit the 100th day in school! We celebrated by doing 100 exercises, a science experiment with 100 drops of water, and some writing papers about 100. My students are 100 days smarter!!

In Bible we finished up the stories of the Judges and reviewed Gideon, Samson, and Ruth and Naomi. Ruth and Naomi’s story ended well with Boaz and Ruth getting married and having a baby named Obed. The coolest thing about Obed is he’s the grandpa of King David, who we’ll learn about soon! And we know that David (and Ruth) are both in the family line of Jesus. How cool is that??

Next Week:
Bible Verse: “The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31
Spelling Words: soon, good, look, took, food, book, zoo, foot, cool, noon, many, he

Friday News for the Week of Jan 30-Feb3

Happy Friday! This week was pretty windy and cloudy but Friday burst forth into sunshine and warmth! Because it was so sunny today, our Fun Friday activity of “chalk” was perfect!!! Here’s some pictures:

This Week:
Reading: We focused on “Making Connections” throughout the week we made connections to our own lives, others books, and the world. We read some books that were really easy to make a connection with. Other books, were not as easy and we had to think hard to try to make a connection. By Friday we read a book together and everyone made a connection to the book! Great job everyone!

In Spelling we were learning long E sounds and we played a game on Thursday to practice our spelling words.

Math: We are getting through place value more and more. This week we got to learn the fun, “Greater than” “less than” and “equal to.” The students had fun learning how the < and > are like an alligator’s mouth who only likes to eat the bigger numbers.

Bible: This week we learned the crazy story about the judge Samson. He had some rules he had to live by, but he ended up breaking the rules. Samson was exceptionally strong! He did not always obey God, and in the end, he got caught. But God used him throughout his life and by the end of his life, God gave him strength one last time to defeat the enemies.
