Friday News for the Week of Jan 16-19

This Week:

We finally had all 21 students this week!

Reading: Problem and Solution: This was an exciting strategy and one that really got us thinking! We read Harry the Dirty Dog and thought of the Problem and Solution. We also read my favorite childhood book, Tikki Tikki Tembo, and thought of many problem and solutions.

Math: We started Place Value - we learned that there are ones, tens, and hundreds and we learned how to count the tens like this: 1 tens = 10, 2 tens =20 etc. I could tell it was confusing but I'm sure the students will get it during this chapter.

Bible: We started to learn about the cycle of the Judges. We learned how the Israelites had peace while they obeyed God, but soon they forgot about what God had done from them, worshiped idols, and their enemies attacked them. When they finally remembered about God and cried out to Him, he sent a judge to help them out. The first judge was Othniel. We also learned some about Deborah. This week we started the story of Gideon. It’s funny to think that the Israelites never learned their lesson and then when we look at ourselves… we are still the same! We let God down so many times, but he is still faithful to love us!

Writing: We edited our How To writings! The students were in partners all week and worked super hard to edit the stories. I can’t wait to publish them and read them to 2nd graders next week!

Next Week:

Spelling Words: by   my   ride   bike   like   time   nine   dive   find   kind   them   would
Bible Memory Verse (again): “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

Friday News for the Week of Jan8-12

Happy Friday!

This week:

Reading: We reviewed the 4 main reading strategies of Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary. Together they make up what we call the Reading CAFE. Today, the students picked one of those four to really improve on for the last 100 days of school. (Can you believe we are on day 83?)  I’m so proud of all the students for how much they have already improved in reading and it’s only the end of the 2nd quarter! We read through Curious George Flies a Kite to go over those strategies.

Math: We finished up Chapter 4 about Subtraction Strategies. This was probably the trickiest chapter yet and there was one lesson that we just decided not to cover at all because it was confusing everyone! But I hope the students learned some new (and faster) ways to subtract past 10. We had our Chapter 4 test today! Next we’ll be moving on to Place Value!

Writing: We have been writing "How to..." stories for a while now! This week we finally picked one of our writings to edit and publish.

Bible: After Christmas break we jumped back into the stories of Joshua and the Israelites going into their Promised Land, Canaan. First they had to cross the Jordan River, and just like the Red Sea, God dried up their path so they could walk through on dry land. The first city they had to conquer was Jericho. God told the Israelites to march around the city for 7 days blowing trumpets. Then on the 7th day, they marched around 7 times and all yelled! Guess what happened? The walls of Jericho fell down! Amazing! God can do anything!
We got to act out the story this week!

Friday News for the Week of December 11-15

Happy start to Christmas Vacation!

We had a great last week before Christmas break in 1st grade!

This week we tuned into Interesting Words. We read a variety of books and stopped at the words that
sounded fun, long, or words we didn’t know what they meant. The students even got their own set
of “sticky notes” to stick inside books where they found interesting words. We read a lot of books by
David Shannon this week too and they had LOTS of interesting words!

Math: This week we continued to look at different subtraction strategies such as making 10 and using
the addition addends to help subtract. On Wednesday, we did a fun math game where the students
worked in partners to figure out Christmas word problems. All the students got a prize because they all
worked so hard!

Bible: We continued the story of the birth of Jesus! We learned how the shepherds came to visit him
as well as the Wise Men from the east who followed the star. It was fun to compare the Christmas
Program to the real story of Jesus’ birth and I think it meant a lot to students after they learned the
connection.

We did a lot of Christmasy things this week including crafts and writing. We even got to visit Jesus in
the manger with our writing about what kind of gift we would bring to Jesus.

Christmas Party - Thanks to all the parents who came and for all the food you brought!! We had so
much fun playing games and eating food. I enjoyed chatting with everyone!

I hope everyone has a very wonderful Christmas break, a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!See you on January 4th when school starts back!

Upcoming Events:

January 8th - KITE DAY and Parent Observation Day! - Make sure to buy your kites over the break!

Friday News for the Week of December 4-8

Happy Friday!

Only 5 more days until Christmas break!

This week was a tiring week with the Christmas Program right in the middle, lots of practice and a late night on Wednesday - BUT the students all did AMAZING!!!! Here’s some pictures from the night:

Everyone did fabulous!!

Reading: This week we read some fun books by David Shannon and talked about reading books with lots of expression. That means using the periods, exclamation points, and question marks well.

Math: We learned some great subtraction strategies such as counting back, using a number line, using doubles to help us subtract, and writing subtraction number sentences. The students are doing great!

Bible: We started the story of Christmas this week! We have 6 envelopes with a picture in it. As I tell the story, I open an envelope and use the picture to tell the story. The students also all have a envelope that they put the same picture in to help tell the story.

Hour of Code: This week, the whole school participated in some thing called the Hour of Code. For 1 hour, the 1st graders did CODING?!?! Like actual computer coding in a fun Star Wars game type! Some of the students caught on real quick and I could see them grow up to be computer engineers! Here’s some pics:

The students can continue to do this at home!

Have them visit:
https://studio.code.org/sections/RQFNYL

Find their name and click their secret picture. Have fun coding!

Science - We started learning about the 4 seasons.

Next Week:
No Spelling Words

Bible Memory Verse: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14

Friday News for the week of Nov 27-Dec 1

Happy Friday and 1st day of December!

This Week:

Reading: We have been learning about the sequence of a story. Stories have to be read in the right order or they don’t make sense! We learned some key words such as, “first, next, then, finally” to help tell the story. We read Mercer Mayer stories all week to help us out with the sequence of a story.
Today, I gave students a cut up story and they had to put it in the right order.

Math: We finished Chapter 3 with strategies to help us with adding numbers to 20. The students all worked super hard to use the different strategies.

Writing: We continuing to work through How to teaching books! I’m so proud of all of the students! We will edit and publish one of the books in the next few weeks.

Bible: This week we learned about the 10 Commandments that God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai. Those are good rules for everyone to live by! We also learned about the building of the Tabernacle. God had Moses send 12 men to spy out there new home Canaan, but 10 came back and said that the people there were scary and that they would lose if they went to conquer the place. 2 of them came back to say, “God can help us fight!” Because of the grumbling of the Israelites, God banned them from going in to their Promised Land for 40 years. Even Moses himself, disobeyed God and he wouldn’t be allowed to go home to Canaan. Wow! When God speaks, it’s best to obey EVERYTHING he says! Next week we’ll learn about the Christmas story!

Next Week:

Spelling Words: boy   boys  box   boxes  dog  dogs  tent  tents  about   how
Bible Memory: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
