Friday News for the Week of Jan28-Feb1

Happy Friday!

We had a fun spirit week! Here's some pics!
Twin Day!

Mismatch day!

Decades Day

Reading: We learned about prior knowledge. We learned that we need to think - what do we already know about a book before reading it. This helps us to think “what do we want to know?” and later “what did we learn?” This week we filled out a KWL chart together. On Friday we read a popcorn book and the students wrote down something the already knew about popcorn.

Math: We started learning about value! The students were excited to start this lesson! It’s an important foundational part to math so I hope they all can master it!

Bible: We are learning about the judges and finished the story of Gideon and the Midianites. We colored a horn, torch, and jar to cut out and use for the story. It was exciting to see how God only needed 300 men to surprise and confuse the Midianites and win against them. Next week we’ll learn about Samson!

Writing: We are learning some really hard stuff in writing - but stuff that will help the students as they grow up to be amazing writers! Today we looked at quoting an expert and how that can help persuade others of your opinion. I told the students that they don’t have to try today - BUT so many of them decided to quote experts from various books in the reading library! I was blown away! Way to go writers!

Social Studies: We started preparing for Kid City by learning about the fire station. We learned what a fire fighter does and we learned how to STOP, DROP, and ROLL if we catch on fire. Next week we’ll learn about the post office!

Spelling: We played some fun spelling games this week.

Next Week:
Bible Memory Verse: “I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliever. ” Psalm 18:1-2
Spelling Words (Review): boys boxes tent late rain may came boat hope told coat like time find kind seed meet meat weak week

This Week:
Reading - We thought about Mental Image. Mental Image is the ability to see a picture in your brain. This week we read some picture books with very descriptive words and we tried to see a picture in our brains. On Friday we read a really funny poem but we stopped half way and drew the picture we saw so far. Then we finished the poem and we were all surprised!!

Math: We are zooming through subtraction strategies. This week we learned fact family and related facts. It’s so interesting that numbers have a family too! Next week we’ll finish this chapter and get into Place Value.

Writing: We are developing our opinion writing. This week we looked at an example first graders work and we used a checklist to see how they were doing. Then the students pulled out their own writing and fixed it up and made it even better!

This Week:
Reading: We learned about Problem and Solution. Almost every book has one more more problems and usually at the end, there is a solution. We realized this week that Problem and Solutions connect to our real life. PROBLEM: my pencil broke SOLUTION: get a new pencil! I hope these students grow up to be Problem Solvers!

Math: We are working hard in subtraction strategies such as count back, use a number line, and use doubles facts.

Writing: We are having SO fun in writing! This week I showed the students many “collections” of items and the students had to pick the WINNER and explain their opinion why it should be the winner. Today the students brought their own collections to judge!

Science: We are also enjoying learning about sound. Today we made a book fiddle.

Friday News for the week of January 7-11

Happy Friday! We had a great week back to school after 3 weeks off!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas break! I went to Seoul for 4 days with my mom, then went to Tokyo and spent a few weeks with my parents there.

We had a week of reviewing procedures and getting back into the swing of school with some New Years activities!

Reading: We did a review week to focus on the CAFE Reading strategies. We use the board kind of like a cafe menu, if we’re stuck while reading, we can look at it and it will give us different strategies on how to read! We’ve already practiced a lot of strategies but we still have more to learn! On Friday, I had each child pick one (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary) to see which one they need to work on the most for the rest of the school year.

Math: We finished up Chapter 4! We learned some good and handy addition strategies to help us with some harder addition facts. We had a test today! Next chapter will be subtraction strategies.

Bible: After a review of everything we’ve learned so far, we jumped back into the story of the Israelites after they left Egypt with Moses. God told 12 men to go spy out their homeland, Canaan, but 10 came back with a bad report, “The people are too scary we can’t go!” and 2 came back and said, “It’s ok, God will help us, let’s go!” The people listed to the 10 men’s report and as a result, God was unhappy and he made the Israelites wonder around the desert for 40 years! Wow!

Spelling: We jumped into long vowel sounds this week!

Writing: We did a fun New Year’s Resolution writing this week as well as started Reviews and Opinion writing!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: go   no so  boat coat  rode home hope  old told give said
