Friday News for Week of Sept 30- Oct 4

Wow! I just can't get over how great each and every one of my students are this year. I love them all so much and they are all so different and special in their own way. I am so blessed!

You probably noticed them bringing home "gifts" from their students or even making their own 'gifts' for their classmates. It started with one student who was going to give a gift to only a few students which I gently urged it would not be so fair if only a few got one. So, this student, went home and made enough for the whole class! This sparked the other students making gifts for their classmates. I am blown away by the love and care that each of these students have for each other.

We had a wonderful week in 1st Grade. We finished up many Units and are ready to start learning lots of new things.

In Math - we learned how to count pennies and nickels, which is kind of like counting tally's, and it is a very important skill to know as we start to learn more American money. We also had a Math test on Thursday and everyone did very well!

In Reading - we have begun to practice a reading strategy called Read to Someone. We are building stamina as we help our friends become better readers and we also become better readers. We also learned what a character is this week. We learned that it could be a person, animal, or thing that is acting in the story.

In Bible - we finished learning about the story of Abraham. We learned that God always keeps His promises and that he made some very special promises to Abraham. We are excited to learn about Isaac next.

In Social Studies - we finished up a theme called Me on the Map. We studied our planet earth, our continent Asia, our country Japan, our prefecture Okinawa, and our school OCSI. The students really enjoyed Social Studies.

Coupons!

Your children may have come home from school today exclaiming that they got a coupon.

Every student in my class has a job. When they do that job for the day they get hole-punch on their card. If they get so many hole-punches, they get a prize. I told them it is kind of like having a job and getting paid. Their reward was a choice from some coupons. Here is the explanation of some of the coupons.

Use a pen: When they turn in this coupon, they may use a pen on ONE assignment in class.
Show and Tell: Students may bring one item and show off the item to their friends at the end of the day.  They must show their friends and tell everyone about what it is. The item must be kept in their backpack until Show and Tell time.
Sit with a buddy: When turning in this coupon, the student may move their chair to sit near a friend for 1 hour.
Positive Note to Parents: When using this coupon, I will write a note to their parent telling them how good they are doing in school.
Wear a Hat: They get to wear a hat all day to school.
Bring a Stuffed Animal: Students may bring and carry around a stuffed animal all day to school.
Choose your job: Students may choose for the day a specific job they would like to do, for example line-leader, or Teacher's Helper.
Play Live Mathletics: During our computer time, students may play the live Mathletics game instead of their usual activities.

Have a wonderful Thursday night!

Picture Day

SMILE! It's PICTURE DAY!
October 2nd

October 2nd is picture day for Elementary Students! Please send your child to school dressed with whatever you would like them to wear for taking the picture. PLEASE SEND A CHANGE OF CLOTHES (着替え)in case you don't want your child to get the clothes messy or dirty. The child may change after we take the picture. EVERY CHILD WILL GET THEIR PICTURE TAKEN.

I sent home a form today about Picture Day. Please read over it. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ORDER PICTURES IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO. 注文したくなければ、しなくでいいです。でもしたければ、今日お家に送ってきた紙をご利用ください。If you want to order though, please fill out the form, include the money and send back to school. Also, send me an email to make sure that I received the money and form. There will be no CHANGE (おつりなし) given so please give exact money. Tape or glue the envelope shut so the money does not escape.

Wednesday News

*Note on tonight's homework*
I made a mistake on the spelling homework. Tonight is Spelling Maze. Tomorrow is Spelling Word Search. Sorry about that!

I hope everyone received the Progress Report on Monday. If you did not receive a Progress Report to any of your emails, please let me know and I will make sure to send it to you.

A Note about the Progress Report
To let you know - the V is for Very Good, the S for Satisfactory, the N for Needs Improvement. This is just the very first progress report over the first few weeks of school. Some students may have N for various activities, but that does not reflect badly. It was just an observation from one assignement or from the first weeks of school. This means we will work together in class to help the student in the area that they need improvement.

Thank you for your concerns about your child. We will work together to bring your child up to be ready for 2nd grade!

Tuesday News

Happy Birthday Kanya Manivan!!

Homework Checklist for the week!

Reading Resources:

Everyday, I would like the students to be reading in English for 10 minutes. If you are unable to find some English books at home, the children may take some of my classroom library books home. They also may listen to online books. I am attaching some good links of online read aloud books. Even though these sites of "safe" still, please monitor your child while they are using the computer to teach them safe computer skills.

Thank you!
