Last Friday News from the 2015-2016 School Year

Hi everyone!!

I'm sorry that it's been a few days after school has ended. I hope you are all enjoying the start of summer vacation. I had a few great days in Okinawa and now I am in Tokyo at my parents house before I fly to the US for some of summer vacation.

Here is some fun we had the last week of school in 1.1 class:

Awards Chapel: On our last chapel, some students got awards from PE, Music, Library, Perfect Attendance, and Citizenship Award. Congratulations to these students!

Since we had been learning about the human body I put the students in groups to have them make a life size model of a system. On Tuesday, they brainstormed what they needed to do, and on Wednesday morning, they worked hard making their life size model. Here's some pictures:

Then after the students finished they presented their systems to the class:

The students did AWESOME!!

Then we had our super fun 1.1 Class Party! - Delicious food, fun games, awards, and goodbyes!

THANK YOU EVERYONE for a WONDERFUL year!!
I will miss all of you!

Have a wonderful and safe summer!

Friday News for Week of May 30- June 3rd

HAPPY LAST FRIDAY!!!!!!!
I can’t believe this is the last Friday of the whole school year! Wow!

We had another great week in 1st grade. We finished up some tests and work, we stretched ourselves and the students showed me, they are ready for 2nd grade!

Reading: We had our last round of Reading including Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, and Book Shopping. The students have gained so much stamina and are able to sit quietly and read for 30 minutes! They have also all improved in their reading on average improving .7 levels in reading. The students have also showed me they can put into practice the reading strategies we taught in class in comprehension, accuracy, fluence, and expanding vocabulary. Great job students!

Writing: This week, the students also showed off their Animal Research Projects to each other. Each of them shared their writing with other classmates. I then displayed them on the wall to see. When I send this home next week, parents, please look over it and treasure their hard work!

Math: We also finished up some math tests this week with a Unit 10 Math Test AND an end-of-the-year math test reviewing everything they’ve learned. Some students struggled in different areas of math so it was great to see them work hard and grow through the hard concepts.

Bible: We are not stopping with Bible until the last day of school! This week we compared and contrasted the stories of Esther and Daniel, as well as learned about the 70 years after the Exile when King Cyrus lets the Jews go back to Israel to rebuild the temple - just like God promised! Wow! The people are sorry for their sins and trusting in God as they rebuild the temple.

Science - We are having a blast learning about the human body. So far we have covered the Digestive System, Skeletal System, Nervous System, and Circulatory Systeym. Next week we will begin making a real life size poster of each of these systems which you can see at our class party on Wednesday.

On Friday we stood outside as the seniors walked by! We loved getting to know Ms. Sabrina and Mr. Shawn this year - congratulations for graduation!!!!!

Next Week

Wednesday June 8th - No School Lunch served in the cafeteria. We will have a similar class party to the Christmas Party. Mrs. Alcantara kindly sent and email out to parents to sign up for food to bring. Here’s the link: http://www.perfectpotluck.com/meals.php?t=HCFM1789

Friday News for Week of May 23-27

Sorry for the late Friday News. This week I hadn't been feeling very well and had to stay home on Friday with a bad cough and fever. I am resting a lot so I can hopefully be back to school on Tuesday.

This Week:
Reading: The students focused on making a connection to books as they read independently this week.

Writing: The students continued working on their animal research project and most of the students are on the last step of illustrating their animal.

Math: We are ending our math units with lots of review. We did a day of reviewing clocks as well as vending machine math where we added up 2 things from a vending machine and figured out the money and change.

Bible: We finished up the story of Esther and learned that God used a normal girl to save a whole group of people.

On Thursday, the 4th grade class came to read their homemade books to us. The 1st graders did a great job listening and can now look forward to when they can make their own books in 4th and 5th grade.

This week we also had a special guest helping us in 1st grade. One of the 5th graders, joined us for a few days and helped us out. He helped with reading, spelling, and some math as well as taught the 1st graders about samurai life in Japan.

Next Week:
Last week of spelling words and Bible memory
Spelling Words: what, when, where, who, then, this, there, their, than, they chore, far, more, hard, dirt, first, turn, girl, verse, her
Bible Memory: “Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting.” Nehemiah 9:5b

No School Monday May 30th
Last day of school June 9th - 12:30 dismissal.
