Friday News for week of October 14-17

Can you believe we are already half way through October?
Happy end to the 1st Quarter!

This Week:

Reading: Our strategy for the week was Making Predictions. It's always a good idea to make a guess to what is going to happen next in the story! In our reading journals, we made a prediction about a story Ms. Turner wrote. Using clues, the students had to guess Who Took Ms. Turner's favorite shirt? Seeds, feathers, and an egg. The answer: a chicken!

Here's a sneak peek at what our Weekly 4 looks like: Work on Writing, Word Work, Read to Self, and Read to Someone.

Read to Someone

Read to Self

Special Guest: Mrs. Bezner came to read to our class this week! She read the book, “The Three Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.” The book was great!

Writing: Our strategy for the week is Setting. The students thought about the setting of their stories they were writing.

Math: This week we learned about odd and even numbers. We said that odd is like Odd Todd and they are numbers that don’t have a pair. Even numbers are like Even Steven and they can all be grouped into pairs.

Bible: We finished the story of Joseph and what an incredible story! From the very beginning where Joseph had a dream about the wheat and the stars bowing down to him, to the end where his brothers came to Egypt looking for food during the famine and bowing down to Joseph as the ruler of Egypt! The whole time, through the good and the bad, God was with Joseph. This is my favorite verse from the story, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”  Genesis 50:20

Social Studies: We finished our first unit called Me on the Map. We learned about the world, Asia, Japan, Okinawa, Yomitan, OCSI, and ME in my classroom!  For 2nd quarter we will focus on Science and Life Cycles.

Friday News for Week of October 6-10

Another windy Friday out there! Don’t get blown away~

This Week:
Reading
This was the first week we practiced the Weekly 4 - Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, and Work on Writing. Each day students got to choose which one they wanted to do and independently worked on their choice. We are still practicing, but the students did great! I hope that during this time, students can stretch themselves in the words they are working with both in reading and writing.

Ask Questions while reading: This week we practiced what it means to ask questions during reading. We read aloud a book and asked a question about every page! The question could be as simple as, “Why did the character do that?” or “What is going to happen next?”
Cross Checking - While reading, it is important to check to make sure the pictures and the words are matching up. This is called Cross Checking because you are crossing the pictures and words together. This week we read aloud a story and made sure that on each page, the words I was trying to read matched up with the picture of the story.

Writing:
We continued with Good Beginnings as well as Characters of the stories.

Math: This week we finished Unit 2 of Math with a short math test. So far we have learned reading clocks to the hour, counting pennies and nickels, tally, using number grids to count up and down, as well as counting by 2’s and 5’s.

Today we also did a fun lesson on patterns. The students designed their own pattern and got to see it laid out in squares. We also played a fun game with patters called Musical Pattern Chairs.

Bible: We have started the lesson on Joseph this week and the students are loving it! The Bible workbook came with mini puppets for the students to color and cut out. So many bad things happened to Joseph - he got sold by his brothers as a slave, Joseph’s master’s wife lied and caused him to go to jail, he helped the cupbearer in jail but the cupbearer didn’t remember him. BUT throughout all the bad times, GOD WAS WITH JOSEPH and God is using Joseph in a special ways for His story. I’m excited to share with the students the rest of the story next week!

The students are also doing great in memorizing Psalm 100. We are going to work on memorizing the whole chapter so here is a song to help them memorize it:

Chapel: This week’s chapel was the story of David being picked to be king. David was the youngest of all of Jesse’s sons, but God didn’t look at the outward appearance, God looks at the heart and he saw that David’s heart was the best and picked him to be king.

A picture from music class!

Next Week:

Spelling Words: add puff egg well will doll kiss miss you live

Bible Memory Verse: Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth, worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. Psalm 100:1-3

Friday News for Week of September 29-October 3rd

Happy October!

Hello on this windy day. Don’t get blown over outside!

This Week:

Reading:
This week we learned about the setting of a story. Every story has a setting and it could either be the time (when?) or the place (where?) of the story. We read several books and also tried to figure out the setting of a story by ourselves.

Word Work: This we we practiced what it means to do word work. We used macaroni to practice and form different words we see around the classroom. We want to keep practicing with words because that will help us when we read.

Naming and Telling: We learned that all sentences have a naming and a telling part. Naming = Who? Telling = What? We wrote our own sentence about an animal and cut the sentence apart so we can know which is the naming and which is the telling.

Writing: This week we learned about good beginnings to a story. Some ideas the class came up with are One day, One scary morning, One dark night, One goofy afternoon, etc. The students did great in putting it on to their own writing!

Math: This we week continued to practice counting and trading with nickels and pennies and I think that they all finally understand! It is hard, but with more practice (and later with dimes and quarters) they will be able to do a great job in counting money.

Bible: We finished the story of Jacob! We learned that God had a plan for Jacob’s life even through all the crazy things that happened! God sure never breaks his promises. We also watched several fun videos to show the Bible stories we have learned so far.

God's Story: Noah from Crossroads Kids' Club on Vimeo.

God's Story: Jacob and Esau from Crossroads Kids' Club on Vimeo.

God's Story: Creation from Crossroads Kids' Club on Vimeo.

Chapel: This week’s message in chapel was about when the Lord called Samuel and gave him a special message. Samuel thought it was his friend Eli calling him while he was sleeping, but it was actually God! Samuel finally replied by saying, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”

Next Week:

Spelling Words: (Review) -  cat man had has God hop not mom bed get let yes sun cut bug us did big him fix

Bible Memory Verse: Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth, worship the Lord with gladness. Psalm 100:1

Upcoming Dates and Information:
Today the Walkathon packet was sent home. Please read over it and email me with any questions you have. It is a truly fun day for OCSI and I hope everyone can come out to enjoy fun and exercise and to raise money for more OCSI projects.
