Happy Friday! It’s the end of another great week in 1st grade!

This Week:

Reading - We focused on 3 important things about books: the TITLE, AUTHOR, and ILLUSTRATOR. I think it’s a good skill for the kids to be able to recognize all three parts of a book. We read Clifford books all week to teacher about. Clifford books are so funny! On Friday, the students picked 2 books from their book basket and write the Titles, Author, and Illustrator for those 2 books. Great job students!

We have reached the 20 minutes reading stamina for Read to Self. Next week we will try Read to Someone!

Writing - This week we looked at the steps on how to write a small moment story. First we think of an idea, then we touch each page and tell what we will write about, then we sketch across the pages a rough pictures, and THEN write the story! Phew! So many steps! The students did great thinking of stories and following the writing directions.

Math - We are cruising through the first chapter and we started to learn sums to 4 and 5. Next week we will continue all to sums to 10.

Bible - This week we reviewed everything we’ve learned in Bible so far and then we learned about Abram and Sarai. God has an amazing plan to save the whole world and it starts with Him telling Abram to GO and MOVE and FOLLOW GOD! Abram does! I’m excited to share as we continue through the Old Testament.

Social Studies - Today we learned about our school as a community and how OCSI is in Yomitan. We went outside to draw a picture of OCSI!

Next Week -

Spelling Words: bed, fed, red, get, let, pet, men, yes, for, as
Bible Memory Verse: “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.” Psalm 8:1

Friday News for the week of September 4-7

Happy Friday!

We had an energetic and fun 3rd week of school! Students are getting more used to the routines and it’s fun to see their personalities coming out.

This Week:

Reading: This week we focused on Cross-Checking. It’s an accuracy strategy that helps the students check the pictures with the words and helps them sound out the words. Mrs. Hewitt read some fun books to the kids this week as we practiced cross checking. We also continued to build stamina in reading. One day this week we made it to 13 minutes! I think for sure we’ll read for 20 minutes next week. :)

Writing: This week we learned that good writers:
  • Write from left to right, up to down
  • Write one idea
  • Underline words they don’t know
  • Use beginning and ending sounds

Math: This week we learned about tally, addition number sentences, and adding with 0. Students are all doing great!

Bible: This week we learned the sad story of when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sin entered the world. Instead of a perfect world like God had created, our world became corrupted and full of sin and sadness. But there is an amazing glimpse of hope that someday, Satan will be defeated and we can live with God in a perfect world again. We also learned the sad stories of Cain and Abel and Noah’s ark.

Social Studies: We learned about communities in a neighborhood and what kind of places we see around town.

Spelling: We had our first spelling test of the year!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: job, God, mom, hop, top, got, not, fox, a, and
Bible Memory: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11 (again)

Upcoming Events:
9/17: Teacher Work Day - no school
9/19-9/20: School Pictures
10/8 - Teacher Work Day - no school

Friday News for the Week of August 27-31

Happy Friday!

We finished the first full week of school! We did some more practice of routines and following the rules, but we also started some lessons and learned some valuable things this week.

Reading - We focused on “Check for Understanding.” This is the foundation of all the reading strategies and even adults do it without thinking. It’s stopping to make sure you understand what you are reading. We read some fun books to practice this strategy. We also practiced “Read to Self.” The students are building stamina so that they can read by them self for 20 minutes. They need to read quietly, stay in one stop, read the whole time, and start right away. This week we read 6 minutes, 4 minutes, then 5 minutes!

Spelling - we reviewed consonant sounds by doing some fun games!

Math - We started Unit 1 about addition. We learned how to tell an addition story and how to think about numbers with parts and a whole.

Bible - We learned about the days of creation when God made the world. We learned that on the 7th day he rested and that's why we rest on Sundays and Saturdays!

Social Studies - We talked about Community and how we as a classroom are part of a community - we work and play together!

This week we also talked about the 4 things we want to be at OCSI - Kind, Respectful, Hard workers, and Self-controlled. We really want to learn these for 4 things so that we can grow up to impact the world!

This week we also visited the library and got to check out 1 book. Please have your child read it with you at home. The book is due back on TUESDAY! Please send it with your child then.

Today was our first FUN FRIDAY! The students got to choose origami, geoboards, playdough, or pattern blocks.

This week we also had a special guest start with us in our room - please meet Mrs. Halley Hewitt. She will be student teaching in our classroom until December. She has jumped right into the classroom learning everyone’s names and helping students with their work. She will slowly start teaching different subjects throughout the year. She has already worked with kids for many years. I’m excited to together this semester!

Next Week:

Bible Memory: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11

Spelling Words: am, at, cat, man, ran, had, has, can, I, the (Spelling test will be on Friday!)

Hi everyone!

It was so great to see the parents who came out to Open House on Friday evening! I enjoyed chatting with each of you and am excited about teaching your child this year.

We had a great 1st week of school. I enjoyed getting to know the 20 wonderful students. We practiced a lot of routines, made new friends, went to Art, PE, Music, and to the Computer Lab, and SO much more!

We learned the first 4 classroom rules-
#1 Listen when your teacher is talking
#2 Raise your hand to speak or stand
#3 Follow directions quickly
#4 Make smart choices

Everyday the students filled up the pompom jar, that they got to have free play time for about 20 minutes.

Next Week:
Homework is starting! One page of phonics and math every day Monday-Thursday. Please also start reading with your child at home for at least 10 minutes!

Homework will be in the Homework Folder. Please have your child return it every day to school.

Please email me if you have any question, or write in the Home to School Notebook (will be sent home tomorrow)! Have a wonderful weekend!

LAST FRIDAY NEWS!!! for the week of June 4-8

Last Friday of the 2017-2018 school year!

We had a wonderful last full week of school!

This Week:
Reading - We reviewed all the reading strategies that we learned this school year starting with Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. Each day we talked about all the different ways we are smarter at reading while reading some fun Dr. Seuss nonfiction books. I’m so proud of all these students and how much they have improved in reading this year!

Math: We finished Chapter 10 with a review of the 3-D shapes AND a review of the whole school year. All the students did great on the Chapter 1-10 test - I was so proud of how much they learned in 1st grade math this year!

Bible- We finished our Bible curriculum with a review of all the promises God made to the Israelites. A promise that God makes is called a Covenant and it’s so amazing how God has a plan from the very beginning of how to save all the people! I told the students that my prayer is that someday all of them will choose to follow Jesus as their Savior. They can do so by say that Jesus is Lord and believing in their heart that Jesus was raised from the dead (Romans 10:9-10). There are many churches this summer who are doing Vacation Bible Schools so please check it out if you have time!

Writing - We did a variety of writing activities this week including making “Thank you” cards, share our animal research papers, and starting a 1st grade memory book.

Science - We started learning about States of Matter - Solid, liquid, and gas.

This week was the last week of our specials: music, PE, and art. I’m thankful for the specials teachers!

This week we also said goodbye to our helper High School teacher Ms. Meg!

Next Week: No spelling words or Bible Memory. There will still be homework but no homework checklist!
