Friday News for the Week of March 18-22

Happy Friday!
Thanks for all the parents and students who came out on Thursday for Student Led Conferences! It was a great day of celebration to see how far we’ve all come in 1st grade. I’m excited that we have 2 more months to continue to grow!

This week:
Reading: Our focus was “Fairy Tales.” These stories are super fun to read!
This week we read, Rumpelstiltskin, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Elves and the Shoemaker, and Rapunzel. We tried to look for common themes throughout all Fairy Tales including a good opening (Once upon a time…) a good ending (and they all lived happily ever after), royalty (kings, princesses), love, magic, good characters, bad characters, and special numbers or repeated phrases. Some Fairy Tales have all of those and others only have some of them. The students enjoyed all the stories that we read!

Math: We finished up Chapter 6 and our first math book! The students did great working on double digit addition and subtraction! Please celebrate with your child tonight as they bring home their math workbook. (Feel free to have them work on the empty problems! :D)

Writing: We are continuing to write letters. The students will get to send their own letters next week!

Bible: We didn’t get to do much Bible this week because we were practicing for Student Led Conferences but today we learned about the end of Saul and Jonathan. They both died in a battle against the Philistines. David heard the news and he cried and was sad for both of their deaths. Soon we’ll see what happens when David becomes king!

Social Studies: This week we learned about the Police Station and Police Officers.

Friday News for the Week of March 4-8

Happy Friday!

Sorry for the lapse in communication last week. I heard from the students and from Mrs. Hewitt that they had a fun week together! I was worried that they wouldn’t be excited to see me… but on Monday morning, they all ran to give me a hug! I missed them!

This week the 1st and 2nd graders had an amazing treat - Kid’s Club! The HS and MS students put on a Vacation Bible School type program for the kids. The students went to Bible time, music, crafts, and games on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. They had a blast! *clap clap* God’s promise *clap clap* is forever! Here’s some pictures:

Reading: We focused on Fables. Fables are stories where usually animals are the characters and they can teach us a lesson. We read some fun ones this week including The Tortoise and the Hare, The Fox and the Stork, The Ant and the Grasshopper, The Ugly Duckling, and The North Wind and the Sun. The interesting lesson we learned that almost every fable taught the readers to “BE KIND!” How great is that?

Math: Continued Chapter 6 with double digit addition and subtraction. We even learned how to add with regrouping!

Writing: We continued writing some poems this week! We wrote some acrostic poems and concrete poems (as well as some poems they wrote with Mrs. Hewitt last week. Today we wrote a variety of poems and picked our favorite to write and publish. Great job everyone!
