Friday News for Week of May 26-29

Happy Friday!

It’s crazy to think how there is only one more full week of school left! I’m so sad think that our fun times in first grade are coming to an end.

We had another great week in 1st grade!

Writing: The students have FINISHED their Animal Research Papers! Today they shared them with each other by reading and learning about each other’s animals. We all ended our papers by saying, “Isn’t God amazing for creating the…” I even learned a lot from the student’s research!

Reading: This week the students did Read to Self and Read to Someone as well as work on Word Work. I met with students to finish reading the 500 Fry Words with them as well as listen to them read the books they picked for the week.

Bible: We are continuing through the Old Testament and now we are learning about the Israelites returning to Israel after 70 years. King Cyrus told some of the Israelites to go back and rebuild the temple. They started with the foundation and when they finished it they had a party. We also learned about Ezra who came back to Israel. He noticed that the Israelites were starting to disobey God again, so he fasted and went with out food for a few days to pray to God. The Israelites listened and said they were sorry for the wrong things and continued to follow after God. It was neat to see the difference between the Israelites before the Exile and the Israelites afterwards. Today we also learned about Nehemiah watching over the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem.

Math: We are reviewing some of the biggest concepts we learned in Math this whole year. We reviewed all about temperature, clocks, and shapes. We are learning by playing some games as well as working hard to finish our Math Journals.

This week we also had some “Guest Readers” come to our room! The 4th and 5th graders have been busy writing and illustrating their own books. The 4th graders came to read them to us yesterday:

Next Week:

Spelling Words: hopping, hoping, making, smiling, makes, liked, worked, stepped, hoped, hopped, ruled, rainbow, airplane, homework, I’m, can’t, we’re, he’s, don’t, we’ll

Friday News for Week of May 18-22

Happy Friday!

Only 2 more Friday’s left in this school year! We had another great week in first grade!

This week:

Spelling: Our spelling words this week were “Compound Words.” We had so much fun thinking of how two words make up one word. The student all picked a word and drew pictures to show what they mean.

Writing: We are making so much progress on our animal writing project! We have compiled the research, and now we are working on the final draft. The students are such hard-workers and continually make me excited to learn more.

Math: We are finally on the last unit! Almost done! This week we reviewed reading clocks, adding money, greater than less than. We also took our Unit 9 test. Unit 10 started with a fun lesson on Vending Machines! The students go to pick 2 snacks from the vending machine in their book and “buy” them by finding the total amount. We played a game like musical chairs where half of the students walked around the room and when the music stops they had to rock paper scissors with a student and the winner picked two things to buy.

Next week, we might even make our own vending machines… :)

Bible: This week we learned all about Esther! Wow! I just love the story of Esther! God used her as queen of Persia to save all the Jewish people in the land. She could have been killed but she was brave and trusted in God. I know that God has placed each of the students in my classroom for a special reason and I know the students will grow up to do incredible things for God - just like Esther did!

Here’s a fun Esther video:

Friday News for Week of May 11-15

Happy Friday! Wow we had another crazy week with there being no school on Tuesday because of the typoon. I’m glad it went over us without much damage!
Do you know what else is crazy about this week?? For any of the dates this week, if you write it forwards or backwards it is the same both ways:

5-15-15   backwards  51-51-5

It’s kind of like some names: Hannah and even in our own class Non!!

It’s pretty easy in Japanese, for example the word tomato  トマト. One student even shared a sentence いかたべたかい?It means “Did you eat squid?”  That’s so interesting!

Happy backwards and forwards week!! :)

This Week:
Writing: We have started our animal research papers. All the students have picked their animal and began reading to figure out the description, food, habitat, and fun fact about their animals. They are writing their information in a graphic organiser to help them see the information. Next week, they will put the information together into paragraphs and finally write the final paper. They are doing such a great job!

Math: We are diving deep into fractions~ it’s a little tricky for 1st graders but they are working hard trying to understand it.

On Monday we did some center work with symmetry, capacity, and riddles on the number grid. The students had so much fun!

Bible: We continued to learn about the stories of Daniel. It’s amazing how God used Daniel in exile in Babylon to show Kind Nebuchadnezzar how great God is! Also, isn’t it amazing how God protected Daniel from the lions? We enjoyed that story so much that we decided to do a Reader’s Theater on it. Stay tuned for the video soon! :)

Field Day 2015 Photos

Friday News for Week of May 4-8

What a fun day at the ZOO!! Thanks to all the parents who came out! I hope you had fun as well. The students and I had SO much fun! We enjoyed all the animals, especially the baby elephant! It was also fun to hold the little chicks and pet the guinea pigs at the petting zoo. The students did a great job recognizing and labeling the animals by the different groups of mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish. Here are some pictures:

This week was also a weird week because we did not have school on Tuesday because of Children’s Day. I hope that you all had a nice day spending time together as a family!

Reading: This week, to prepare for the zoo, we read several nonfiction books about different animals. We learned the different characteristics of each animal type. For a fun website, I attached the Sandiago Zoo website where kids can learn about the different animals and play some games.

Writing: This we we continued writing with All About Something. Next week, we will each pick one animal to research about it and write All About that animal.

Math: This week we practice some number grid puzzles. If we covered up some numbers on the 100's chart, would you know what was underneath? We also did double digit addition with silly sentences. If we went to the zoo and saw a cheetah that is 50 inches tall, and then we saw a penguin standing on top of the cheetah! The penguin is 23 inches tall. How tall are the cheetah and the penguin together? We used different ways of solving the questions - the students did great!

Bible: We are studying the exciting life of Daniel and his friends in Babylon. We are seeing how God is taking care of Daniel and his friends. For a fun video that I made in college:

Next Week:

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about it!

Also, thank you ALL for the lovely gifts and cards for Teacher Appreciation Week! I felt very loved all week!! It is my joy to teach your child!
