Friday News for the Week of May 22-26
Happy Friday!
We figured out today that there is only 9 more days of school left!?!?! Crazy!!!
We had another fantastic week in 1st grade:
This week we had a special guest in our classroom, a 5th grade student. She was super helpful and taught our class how to do origami kabuto hat and a paper plate kabuto hat. Thanks for helping in our class!
Also on Thursday, I was out and so Mr. Spencer subbed for me. I talked to him later on the phone and he said that the student did great!
Writing: We are continuing to write our animal research. We completed the research on diet, habitat, description, and fun fact. Next week we’ll start the next step, putting it all together!
Math: This week we learned all about 3D shapes. We learned the cube, rectangular prism, sphere, cone, and cylinder! We thought about their faces and vertices and thought about where we might see them in real life.
We also got to make some fun shapes with whole and half circles.
Bible: We finished up the incredible story of Esther. She was a Jew living in Susa and after King Xerxes sent away the queen, there was a nation wide search for a new queen. Of all the ladies, Queen Esther was picked! Later on, an evil guy named Haman made the king make a rule to kill all the Jews. It was up to Esther to save everyone! Even though she might be killed, she approached the king and asked him to come to a party. At the party she revealed that she was a Jew and that Haman was trying to kill all the Jews. The king was mad and made a new rule to save all the Jews. Because of Esther’s bravery, she saved all the Jews. Incredible! Soon the Israelites (Jews) would be willing to return to their homeland… let’s see what’s going to happen!
In PE this week, the students got to run through a super duper amazing MAZE that Mr. Meredith created!
On Tuesday was Maya’s last day before she went on a trip during the summer so we did a fantastic SCIENCE EXPERIMENT: The Dancing Raisons. The students made a hypothesis and tested out the experiment. We talked about how this experiment had all the three types of matter. Then Maya’s mom showed us different examples of solid, liquid, and gas. So much fun! Thanks Maya and Maya’s mom!
Next Week:
NO SCHOOL - MONDAY!! Memorial Day
Spelling Words: hopping, hoping, making, smiling, makes, liked, worked, stepped, hoped, hopped, ruled, rainbow, airplane, homework, I’m, can’t, we’re, he’s, don’t, we’ll
Bible Memory Verse: “Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting.” Nehemiah 9:5b
Upcoming Events: Last Day of School Party!!! Parents are invited to come at 11:00am as we eat together, play games, and celebrate the last day of school! Dismissal will be at 12:30.

Extra news!
Hi everyone!
You probably received the summer school form in the Friday Folder and it was probably confusing.
I'm sorry about that!
Let me help explain:
A few weeks ago, the teachers sent home the summer school packets to only the "Required" and "Invited" students. After those students registered, we opened up registration to anyone who wants to come.
If you just received the form on Friday, that means that your child is welcome to come to summer school, if you wish (they are not "Invited" or "Required" they are specially invited!!) There is half day and whole day. It is a great program and very fun for the kids.
There is also a bus service provided, but not lunch provided.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Again, everyone is specially invited to summer school!

Friday News for the Week of May 15-19
Only 3 more weeks left in 1st grade!
Here's some pics from the field trip:
Science: We were working on solid, liquid, and gases again today. We got to feel balloons filled with air, water, and ice.
Yesterday we had a fabulous trip to the zoo! It was great weather and we had a lot of fun figuring out what group each animal belonged to. Today we did a math activity where we made a graph and answered questions about our data.
We are starting our animal research this week. We picked one animal to study and learned some more important nonfiction text features. Today we started our research by highlighting and finding what food (the diet) of our animal. Next week we will find the Description, Habitat, and Fun Facts.
Math: We are learning about equal shares in halves and fourths (or quarters). We aren’t getting into fraction just yet, but I’m exposing it to them so they’ll be familiar with it in the future! Next week we’ll take our Chapter 9 test and start on our last chapter! (3D shapes)
Bible: We are in an exciting part of the history of Israel. Because of their disobedience to God, he allowed the Assyrians and Babylonians to come and take over. Because God always keeps his promises, he will allow the kingdom of Judah to return after 70 years. (He promised David’s family will be in the line of kings forever!) Now the Israelites are exiled in Assyria and Babylon, but the faithful people still follow after God. Daniel and his three friends were exiled to Babylon and because God was with them, Daniel and his friends were promoted to the highest place by the king. Today we learned both the story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den as well as the Fiery Furnace. Both times, God miraculously saved his people and showed the Babylonians his power and might!
Spelling: This week we learned all about compound words. Stay tuned for a video from the 1st grade class to the tune of PPAP…
Next Week:
Spelling Words (Review Week): what, when, where, who, then, this, there, their, than, they chore, far, more, hard, dirt, first, turn, girl, verse, her
Bible Memory: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” Romans 10:15
Upcoming Events:
May 29th No SCHOOL - Memorial Day
June 9th - Last day of School - 12:30 Dismissal! Class Party :)

Friday News for the Week of May 8-12
Hello everyone!
Only 20 more days of school left here in 1st grade!!!AHHHH
This week:
Reading: We focused on Author’s Purpose. Our questions was, “Why did the author write the book?” Usually there are 3 reasons: to persuade, to inform, and to entertain. All together that makes PIE!
We also learned the difference between a fact and an opinion. Facts go with inform and nonfiction text such as books about animals or science and history books. Opinions go with persuasive writing and usually starts with, “I think…”
Writing: This week we did some All About Something writing! First the students interviewed another student to write all about them and then the students wrote all about 1st grade.
Math: We are zooming through chapter 9 with learning about shapes, sides, vertices, composite shapes and more!
Bible: We finished up some fun stories about Elijah this week. We learned about his competition with the prophets of Baal on Mt Carmel (God totally won!), about how Elijah didn’t die and went up to heaven, and about how the prophets told the people about how Jesus would come - amazing!
Science: We are continuing to learn about animal classification with amphibians and birds!
Next Week:
Spelling Words: beehive, airplane, football, into, homework, birthday,
bookmark, firefly, wildlife, rainbow, any, number, know
Bible Memory: “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom
and power are his.” Daniel 2:20
Thursday - FIELD TRIP! Don’t forget a home lunch, pencil and eraser, bag, hat, and excitement!

Friday News for the Week of May 1-5
Hi everyone!
Happy Golden Week! I hope the parents who have had off this week were able to take some nice rest and spend time with their families.
In first grade we are continuing to learn lots of great things!
Reading: We focused on Nonfiction Text Features. Nonfiction books have things like: Table of Contents, Glossary, Index, Captions, Photos, Illustrations, Maps, Bold print and SO much more!
Writing: We finished up our acrostics unit this week with the students writing their own acrostics. It was challenging for some of the students but at the end all of the students said they enjoyed writing poems.
Math: We are enjoying learning about shapes: squares, rectangles, trapezoid, triangle, and circles. We learned hard words like vertices, and make our own drawings out of shapes!
Bible: We learned a quick history of the kings of Israel and Judah this week. We learned that because of Solomon’s disobedience, Israel was split in 2 with 2 different kings. Most of the kings did not follow God. Soon, something very bad will happen to Israel, but God is faithful and continues to watch over the people of Israel. I’m so thankful God always keeps His promises!
Science: We started a Science Unit on Animal Classification. This week we learned about Mammals and Reptiles. It’s so neat how God made all different kinds of animals and how they can fit into about 5 groups! We learned the characteristics of each group and learned to recognize animals by which group they belong in!
Yesterday, the students got to see something amazing! The HS Physics class had made an Optical Illusion Box! The 1st grades students got to go inside, and then peep through a hole to see the illusion! So fun!
Next Week:
Spelling Words: played worked needed hopped wagged stepped liked hoped ruled skated their than there

5/18: Field Trip to Kodomono Kuni
