Friday News for the Week of August 28-September 1

Happy 2nd week of school

We are having a rocking time in 1st grade!

This week:

Reading - We started to build stamina in our Read to Self time. We started at 3 minutes, then the next day we went down to 2 minutes, but the next day we went up to 5, 8, and then 9 minutes by Friday! Our goal is 20 minutes!

We also learned a good system of picking our own books called IPICK. Students will be picking 6 books every week for their book basket to use while they Read to Self and Read with Someone. We learned that picking books is like picking shoes to wear. We wear them for different purposes and according to our likes and size.

Math - We took a beginning of the year math test that was pretty hard, but it will show me what I need to teach and focus on this year!

Writing - We started Writer's Workshop by practicing getting the writing folders and writing the whole time until I ring the bell. We also practiced writing our name and date on every writing paper. On Monday I had the students write WHATEVER they wanted to! This will be a baseline writing to compare with some writing they will do later in the year. I think they will be blown away by their improvement in writing!

Spelling - We reviewed all of the consonants this week and practiced writing in our spelling books.

Bible - We started with the beginning of the Bible in Genesis with the story of creation. We learned that God created everything in 6 days and on the 7th day he rested. We learned that his best creation was humans when he created Adam and Eve. God is so amazing for being our creator!

For Fun Friday, the students got to use their whiteboards to draw!
