Friday News for the Week of March 26-30

Happy Friday!

Today was Culture Fair where we got ‘passports’ and we traveled around to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms to learn about different countries.

We also got to eat lunch outside!

This week for reading we did a Reader’s Theater!
The title was Did You See Chip? The students had fun playing their parts with the costumes and reading the scripts.
We also practiced speaking clearly and smoothly.

Here are the videos:

Writing: This week we were writing fairy tale stories. We didn’t quite finish, but I’m excited to finish them after spring
break and share them with you. :)

Math: We finished Chapter 7 on graphing! The students and I had so much fun on this unit. We took surveys in class
and made tally charts, bar graphs, and picture graphs. Way to go 1st graders!

Bible: We took a break from David and jumped to the story of Jesus’ last days on earth - the Holy Week, or some people call it Passion Week. It’s a very intense story of what lead to Jesus’ death on the cross,
and though it seems like the story ends there in heartbreak - it doesn’t, it was so wonderful to tell the students
how Jesus resurrected (was alive again!) and defeated death, returned to heaven and is still there!

This Sunday is Easter Sunday - if you have a chance, I’d like to invite you to an Easter church service. Here’s some around Okinawa:

Keystone Nazarene Church -

Koza Baptist Church 686 Noborikawa, Okinawa City, JP 904-2142 -

Calvary Chapel Ginowan: 〒901-2205 Okinawa Prefecture, Ginowan, Akamichi, 1-3-5

Calvary Chapel Okinawa 8:30AM* & 10:30AM*
134-1 Noborimata
Nakagusuku-son, Nakagami gun
Okinawa, Japan 901-2421
沖縄県中頭郡中城村登又 134番地1

It’s Spring break time!! I hope you all have a
wonderful week spend traveling or enjoying time
with family and friends.

See you back at school on April 9th!

Friday News for the Week of March 19-23

Thanks for a great week of conferences! I enjoyed each and every conference with you! I was SO VERY proud of my students as they shared what they are good at, what they need work in and shared all what they learned this year so far. I know you all were so very proud of them too!

This week:
Reading: Our reading strategy was Fables which are stories with animals in them that teach a moral or a lesson. We read some familiar ones such as “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Little Red Hen” and the students were able to see the lessons and we realized many of the lessons were to be KIND, or HARD-WORKING, or RESPECTFUL, or SELF-CONTROLLED! (sound familiar :)

Math: We are cruising through graphs! We learned about bar graphs this week and now we can connect tally chart, picture graphs, and bar graphs!

Writing - We started writing our own fairy tales. This week was all about brainstorming our stories of a setting, good characters, bad characters, magic, problem and solution, and beginning middle and end!

Bible: We learned about David’s life as king this week then took a little break from David to go back to the life of Jesus. We learned about his many miracles and amazing things that he did while he walked on the earth. Next week we’ll talk about the events leading to Jesus’ death and resurrection!

Friday News for the Week of March 12-16

We had another great week at OCSI. The weeks are starting to fly by! According to our calculations we
we have been in school for 125 days and we have about 55 days left!

This Week:
Reading - Fairy Tales - This week we read multiple versions of The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and
the Three Bears - which was WAY too fun! We read a version of the Three Little Pigs that was from the
perspective of the wolf. We also read a Goldilocks version written by our favorite Mo Willems (that had
secret pigeons in it!!!). We did a little work on comparing and contrasting the two Goldilocks and the
Three Bears books together, which is a great (but hard) reading strategy. The students did awesome!

We also worked on seeing where we can find “sh” and “ch” words as well as how we can use “be”
“being” and “been.”

Writing - We have been writing opinion letters all week. Everyday the student received a “letter” from a
teacher at school that asked the 1.1 students their opinion on various things. On Thursday the letter was
from me asking the students their idea for a class pet. The students had to think of good reasons and by
giving good details. Writing opinion letters are hard but the students worked really hard.

Math: GRAPHING! We are rocking through the new Math unit of making graphs. We have so far
learned about a tally chart and a picture graph. The 2nd graders even came into our class to ask our
class a survey. Some students even started making their own survey in their free time! Here’s a picture
of the students asking each other some survey questions.

Bible: Our Bible stories have been full of excitement lately with the story of Saul’s final battle and
David finally becoming king. It continues next week with the rest of David’s reign and some problems
that arise.

Next Week:
Spelling Words: took, food, foot, soon, play, class, fly, glad, pray, dress, trust,
frame, smile, stop, sleep, snack, wish, shape, much, child

Friday News for the Week of March 5-9

Happy Friday!

Reading: Our focus was “Fairy Tales.” These stories are super fun to read!

This week we read, Rumpelstiltskin, Jack and the Beanstalk,
Hansel and Gretal, and Rapunzel. We tried to look for
common themes throughout all Fairy Tales including a good
opening (Once upon a time…) a good ending (and they all
lived happily ever after), royalty (kings, princesses),
love, magic, good characters, bad characters, and special
numbers or repeated phrases. Some Fairy Tales have all of
those and others only have some of them. The students
enjoyed all the stories that we read! Next week we’ll
continue with some other common Folk Tales.

Writing - We were learning about letter writing and writing
opinions. We will continue that next week.

We also did some spelling review and here is a picture
of the students working together to solve spelling riddles.

Math - We finished Chapter 6 with a test today! Double digit
addition seems scary at first, but all the students tried
their best and finished strong. Next week we’ll start
learning about graphs!

Bible: We continued to learn about David being chased
by King Saul. David and Saul’s son, Jonathan, became best
friends and Jonathan helped David escape. David even ran
to hide in the Philistine territory because he knew Saul
wouldn’t come there to look for him. One time David was
in the back of the cave, and Saul went into the cave to
rest. David crept up to Saul and cut off a piece of his
robe to show Saul that he doesn’t want to hurt him even
though he could have. Saul realized how wrong it was for
him to chase David, but soon Saul went right back to
chasing him. Next week we’ll finish the story of Saul
and move on to David as king!

Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

Friday News for the Week of Feb 26-Mar2

We had a super duper fun Week of Reading! It was so fun to dress up with different outfits and bring a
stuffed animal to school! We got so excited about reading!!!

On Monday we had 4 guest readers:

Tuesday was the character parade!

Wednesday was wear a hat day so we read outside!

Thursday we read with a buddy class - the 6th grade class

Friday was Pajama day!!!

This Week:

Reading and Writing: We started learning about letter writing and addresses. On Thursday we wrote a
letter on a post card, today we wrote our addresses on the post card and we mailed the post card at the
address! Check your mailboxes on Tuesday or Wednesday! :)

Math: We are cruising through double digit additions. We added tens, we counted on, and we regrouped.
Next week we are moving on to double digit subtraction and chapter review and test.

Bible: We learned how God chose a new king named David. David was the youngest of 8 brothers and it
was so cool to learn that God doesn’t look at the outside of a person, God is concerned about the heart.
We made a craft this week of a picture of us and wrote some things that we want in our heart that only
God can see.

We also learned the amazing story of when David fought the giant called Goliath. David used only some
stones and a slingshot to win against a giant. But that’s not all that helped him - God was on David’s side
and God helped him win. For Fun Friday, we fought against Goliath ourselves with a spoon and a pompom!
