Friday News for the Week of May 21-25

Happy Friday!

We have 12 days of school left!

This Week:
Reading - Compare and Contrast - This week we read several Skippy Jon Jones books. All are written by the same author so we looked at what is similar and different about the different books. We also looked at comparing and contrasting 1st grade and 2nd grade, boys and girls, and summer and winter. We also connected this to Bible where we compared and contrasted Daniel and Esther.

Writing: We are busy writing our animal research reports. Right now we are compiling our research into paragraphs to write on the final draft. We will start the final draft next week and be finished by the following week.

Math - We are almost finished with our 2D shapes chapter. This week we learned what it means to have halves and fourths and equal parts. We don’t want to say, “That’s not fair!” instead, equal parts are fair for all the pieces! We will take our Chapter 9 test on Tuesday. Then next week we will finish with 3D shapes! We have also been working on some timed addition fact quizzes to get our addition facts faster and faster!

Bible: We learned the amazing story of Esther this week! God used her to save all the Jews in the Persian empire. She risked her life to go before the king. What an incredible story!

Science - We finished learning about amphibians and reptiles.

For Fun Friday today we got to play with chalk! We decorated the whole basketball and 4-square court!

Next Week:
Bible Memory: “Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting.” Nehemiah 9:5b
Spelling Words: (Review and some new) hopping, hoping, making, smiling, makes, liked, worked, stepped, hoped, hopped, ruled, rainbow, airplane, homework, I’m, can’t, we’re, he’s, don’t, we’ll

Friday News for the Week of May 14-18

Happy Friday!!

We had a fantastic day yesterday at the zoo!! We had great weather walking around the zoo and exploring in the Wonder Museum. Thanks to all the parents who came out!

Here are some pictures:

This Week:
Reading - Author’s Purpose - Why do authors write books? We learned that it’s mostly for 3 reasons: to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. We read some fun books where the author tried to persuade us or change our mind, as well as to teach us something. Most books we read in 1st grade are simply entertaining books.

Math - We learned about composite shapes this week. It was fun to try to figure out what different shapes we can make with the shapes we have.

Writing - We started our animal research papers. We read though some books and online materials about our animals and highlighted diet, habitat, description, and fun facts.

Bible - We learned about Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Babylon. God did amazing things through their lives as they stood strong and continued to worship God. God saved them from a fiery furnace and a lions den. Each time the king proclaimed “Wow! The God you serve is amazing! Let’s all worship Him!!” Let’s strive to live like Daniel in our world today too.

Today we stopped by the 3rd grade Book Fair!

Next Week:
Spelling Words(Review): what, when, where, who, then, this, there, their, than, they chore, far, more, hard, dirt, first, turn, girl, verse, her

Bible Memory: “It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.” Psalm 18:32

Upcoming Events:

  • 5/28: Memorial Day - no school
  • 6/13: Last day of classes - class party (no lunch in the cafeteria)

Friday News for the Week of May 7-11

Happy Friday!!

We had a great time at Blue Seal last night! Thanks to all the families that came out!

and Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday for all the wonderful moms of the 1.1 students! Thanks for all you do!!

So crazy to think there is only a few more weeks of school left!

This Week:

Reading - We read some more Kevin Henkes books and looked at summarizing. We realized that summarizing is kind of like retelling but with fewer words. It’s like of like telling the most important parts of the story like - who, what, where, where, why?

We were also finding “ed” words this week. We learned that they can come in 3 sounds /d/ /t/ or /ed/

Writing: We finished publishing our Fictional Narrative stories this week. We even wrote a page called “All About the Author” where the students had to write in 3rd person such as “This is his/her 3rd book.” They all did great!

Math: We are zooming through learning all about shapes. The students have nailed what “sides” and “vertices” mean and they are using good thinking skills to think through the basic shapes of circle, rectangle, square, triangle, and trapezoid.

Bible: This week we learned the incredibly sad story of what happened to Israel and Judah. After multiple kings who disobeyed God and multiple prophets who called people back to God, the people still didn’t listen. God lead the Assyrian king to come and totally destroy Israel. Later the King of Babylon came and took of Judah. Both kings took the Israelites away as slaves back to their land and destroyed the land. BUT God always keep his promised, and God promised not to destroy the family of David. God used Jeremiah to tell that people that in 70 years some people will return to Judah and they will rebuild it again. Our next stories will revolve around the Israelites taken over to Babylon.

Science - This week we learned about mammals!

Next Week:

Bible Memory Verse: “Praise be the the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. Daniel 2:20
Spelling Words: beehive, airplane, football, into, homework, birthday, bookmark, firefly, wildlife, rainbow, any, number, know

Friday News April 30-May 3

Happy Golden Week!

I hope you had some time together with family and friends enjoying Children’s Day and a time of rest and relaxation.

We had a great week in 1st grade:

Reading - Main Idea - We read some pretty great Kevin Henkes books this week and thought about Main Idea of the story. We learned that it’s a theme that goes across the entire book, not some little tiny detail about the story. It was a good skill for us to talk about this week since many of the Kids A-Z quizzes ask, “what is the main idea of this story?” Now the students know!

Writing - The students are writing fantastic fictional narratives!

Math: We cruised right through Chapter 8 with time and measurement. The students did great! The 1st grade curriculum only teaches time to the hour and half hour, they will learn to the minute in 2nd grade. We did a fun clocks game called "Scoot" today!

Bible: We are learning about exciting times in the history of Judah and Israel that got split after the death of Solomon. Many of the kings did not follow after God and did bad things. God sent prophets to warn the people. One great prophet was Elijah who had a competition with the prophets of Baal to see who could bring down fire from heaven, God or Baal? Of course, God won! :)

Science - We are learning about animal classification and we learned about birds this week!

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW

Next Week:

Bible Memory: “The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.” Psalm 145:13
Spelling Words: played worked needed hopped wagged stepped  liked hoped ruled skated their than there
